SubSoul Fridays…The GRAMMY Edition

SubSoul Fridays…The GRAMMY Edition

Last night was the 53rd Annual Grammy Award, and as a major fan of music I was tuned into the festivities. Four of my favorite indie/neo-soul/urban alternative (however you want to classify them) artists were nominated for Grammys this year. Eric Roberson, Bilal, and Janelle Monae were both nominated in the category, Best Urban/Alternative Performance; and Esperanza Spalding in the category, Best New Artist. While Erro, Bilal, and Janelle had to watch as Cee Lo Green (S/O to the ATL); Esperanza was the shocker of the evening beating out Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence & The Machine, and Mumford & Sons.

Last night was indeed a very special night for the indie/neo/alternative soul scene.  Watching Esperanza accept her Grammy made me think of the songs that first made me become a fan of her, Erro, Bilal, and Janelle. So here are those songs for your listening pleasure. If you’ve never heard of Esperanza, Eric Roberson, Bilal, or Janelle Monae, I hope hearing their music, thier artistry, their passion will inspire you to do a little more searching into them yourselves.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

Today is the 25th Anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. In celebration of Dr. King’s life, here is his famous “I Have A Dream” speech for your viewing pleasure and education. Please take a moment of silence today to honor Dr. King’s legacy and the legacy of the other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Without thier sacrifices, we wouldn’t have many of the freedoms we take for granted today.

Keep the Dream Alive!!!
